Campus Communicators Meeting
April 9, 2008
The Campus Communicators meeting was held at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 9, 2008, in Room 231 of Foy Union.
Thanks to those of you who attended last week's Campus Communicators Meeting. Below are the topics discussed and also brief summaries of updates provided from members.
Presentations were made by the following guest:
Cathy Ramey of OIT discussed information regarding campus phishing scams, both initiating from campus and targeted to campus.
OCM staff brought the Communicators up-to-date on the following:
- New members introduced.
- Update on campus security (news surveillance, cameras and emergency publications), AU Alert (policy for use) and counseling (resources expanded).
- Viewbook updated for Admissions.
- Major Events Updates: President’s Installation on April 24 at 4:00 p.m. on Cater Lawn; Shelby Dedication on April 19 at 3:30 p.m.; and the New Student Center dedication on September 19.
- Campaign update/announcements scheduled for June.
- Publications update (the new “Family Album” publication featuring faculty members, graduates and students, ads, samples, Raptor Center, COSAM, Libraries, Business) and new campus guides.
- Web Cams – more interactive and involved; locations being selected and equipment purchased.
- Sample materials shared with attendees – new campus guides, nursing materials.
Updates were given by the following Colleges/Schools/Departments:
- Engineering: Shelby Center dedication activities on April 18; Website revamped; Transportation Conference recently held with over 500 in attendance; campaign wrap up scholarship donors.
- Human Sciences: International Quality of Life Awards scheduled for 1-3-09; Worldviews magazine printed; recent luncheon held with David Bronner as speaker; scholarships total raised announced; new name for study abroad because of endowment by Bruno family,
- Ag, Alabama Experiment Station and NRMDI: Recently celebrated "Ag Week," including a presentation by Gale Buchanan, the U.S. Department of Agriculture under secretary for research, education and economics and a fish fry picnic; portions of the audio will go up on iTunes; the market at Ag Heritage park is opening April 24 and has a website www.ag.auburn.edu/themarket.
- Office of the Dean of Students: Grand opening of student union to be held on 9-19-08 with tours, food vendors, parade from the old student union to the new student union and many other activities; watch for upcoming announcements.
- Diversity: Women’s Leadership Conference; Take Back the Night; scholarship luncheon; minority alum events to be held in Birmingham and Atlanta scheduled; Dr. Jenda being honored for the Algernon-Sullivan Award; Women's Resource Center to open on 3rd floor of Mary Martin Hall; Multicultural Center will move to new student union.
- Study Abroad: 700 students going out this year; Jordan program; IT person now on board to revamp Website; AU Abroad now reaches out to all SEC schools.
- Music: Performances mentioned; chamber music series ongoing; budget for marketing performances now available.
- Libraries: National Library Week is April 14-18; In response to a request from the Graduate Student Council, a quiet study space has been created on the third floor for faculty and grad students; new internal Web site for Libraries staff: www.lib/auburn.edu/news; new laptop lab opens on 4-14-08 on the 2nd floor; expanded digital resource lab; Alexander Hamilton exhibit in Special Collections open until 4-15-08.
- COSAM: Working on spring magazine; leadership council; DAMES and GUTS events for children.
- Nursing: Annual Blue Jean Ball scheduled for 9-19-08 at Pat Dye’s farm; hosting 25th anniversary of the class of 1983.
- OIT: AU Alert; “My Account” becoming more self service.
- Alumni: Next Auburn magazine mails on May 14 with story featuring Autism Center; working on Harris directory, published every four years, for release in Dec. 2008; Tiger 2 Tiger page on Alumni Web site, a great social networking tool for alumni.
