Campus Communicators Meeting
June 4, 2008
The Campus Communicators meeting was held at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 4, 2008, in Room 231 of Foy Union.
Thanks to those of you who attended the recent Campus Communicators Meeting. Below are the topics discussed and also brief summaries of updates provided from members.
OCM staff brought the Communicators up-to-date on the following:
- New members.
- Update on strategic plan/media and general inquires regarding budget and tuition.
- Summer stories update and tip sheet forthcoming. Good discussion by all on how to uncover more research stories about projects being done by grad students and faculty.
- Web updates – slide show on home page – pictures with cut lines, including photos from students for inclusion on home page.
- Social media page and linking to it from prospective student update page.
- Emergency Management page (www.auburn.edu/emergency).
- Web cams update – six new Web cams ordered with installation expected to be completed in two to three weeks (www.ocm.auburn.edu/webcams).
- University Photographers Association of America (UPAA) conference scheduled 6-16 thru 6-19 on campus with National Geographic photographer, Steve McCurry, as keynote speaker.
- NCAA spot update – “war eagle moment” occurring in Alaska to be filmed this month at Lake Guntersville.
- Fisheries as an example of a key university program; tabloid newspaper section, nature magazine ad, Uganda news video, recruitment video, U.S. News reputational mailer and news pitches.
- Pretty Face ad concept adapted for different markets to convey different messages, including economic impact (state), outstanding facts (students/ admissions), facts that make AU a good neighbor (Welcome magazine).
- Credit card merchant program in place with vendors.
- New Timely Facts “Family Album” in the works.
- Style Guide being updated for reprinting soon in limited quantities; online access for the Style Guide can be viewed at www.auburn.edu/communications_marketing/styleguide.
Updates were given by the following Colleges/Schools/Departments:
- Education: “Flip flops” story picked up by USA Today and the Good Morning America show; State of Alabama report card grade of 3.9 received; Keystone magazine being mailed shortly; group participating in legislative visit; accreditation achieved.
- Engineering: Retreat held to realign office functions for better efficiency; summer camps being offered; working on magazine; bricks and pavers to be sold for Shelby Center; updating undergrad recruitment materials.
- CADC: Opening of new Salvation Army Store held; first ASAP for minority students being held in two weeks; summer camps.
- Human Sciences: International Quality of Life Awards scheduled for Jan. 31, 2009; Doug Coutts of the World Food Program has been assigned to AU for a two year period and will teach courses; Dean Henton and Harriet Giles recently returned from a trip to Guatemala; Healthy Marriages initiatives.
- Extension: Won two international awards for “Calendario del Primer Año de Vida del Bebé,” the Spanish version of an earlier publication, “Baby’s First Year Calendar.” Took preorders for both English and Spanish versions from Extension Services in nine other states and personalized the calendars with their logos. Several other publications distributed/shown.
- Office of the Dean of Students: Grand opening date for the new student union moved to 11-5-08 (during Homecoming game).
- Diversity: Selected for two workshop presentations in San Diego and Orlando on the Strategic Diversity Plan; bottled water distributed to Camp War Eagle parents; hired Multicultural Center Director; Summer Enrichment Experience Program; PLUS (Provost Leadership Undergraduate Scholarships) -- new monies and 3rd cohort of 24 students; awarded National Science Foundation Bridge to the Doctorate Fellowship Program for 2nd time -- $30,000 fellowship for minority graduate studies starts in August.
- Fisheries: Web cams in place, can be linked through OCM; new brochure for department being scheduled with OCM.
- Study Abroad: New booklet and posters created; changing to online application only in near future; trying to create interest in Study Abroad to Korea for one semester.
- Music: Working on schedules, TBA.
- Development: Celebrating close of faculty campaign on 6-27-08; donor relations thank you cards going out; case online speaker event held recently.
- OIT: By Fall all student dorms to be wireless, along with the new student union; new on campus child care initiative currently being investigated.
- Liberal Arts: Summer journalism conference to be offered; annual Perspectives magazine nearly done.
- Business: Construction ongoing for new Harbert Lab with ribbon cutting to be held on 9-26-08; donor found to help with branding; Alabama Water Resources Conference to be held in Orange Beach; ran off OCM designer ☺.
