AU PROVOST FILLS TWO NEW POSITIONS, ASSIGNS OUTREACH OVERSIGHT

Auburn University Provost John Heilman has announced the addition to his staff of a new associate provost and assistant vice president as well as a new reporting structure for University Outreach.

Sharon Gaber, who has served as associate dean in AU’s College of Architecture, Design and Construction, has been named associate provost for academic administration. Johnny Green, who served most recently as a special assistant to the provost, has been named assistant vice president for access and community initiatives within the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs.

In addition, Heilman has assigned oversight of the Office of University Outreach to Assistant Vice President for Outreach Royrickers Cook. Cook will oversee Outreach operations that had been reporting to David Wilson, who recently resigned his position as associate provost and vice president for University Outreach to accept a position at the University of Wisconsin. According to Heilman, the decision to hire any new vice president for Outreach should be made by the new AU president, for whom a search is underway.

Gaber, who was appointed to her new position after an internal search, came to Auburn from the University of Nebraska in 2002 as an associate dean and professor in the College of Architecture, Design and Construction, but recently has served part-time in the provost’s office. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Occidental College, a master’s from the University of Southern California and a doctorate from Cornell University.

“Sharon is remarkable in terms of her extensive administrative experience both here and at the University of Nebraska, and has already been invaluable in coordinating the complex functions of this office,” said Heilman.

Green served AU in several positions - including as a member of the AU political science faculty, interim assistant provost for Diversity and Multicultural Affairs, and director of the AU Center for Diversity and Race Relations - before being named a special assistant to the provost. In his new position, Green will work within the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs, headed by Associate Provost Overtoun Jenda.

Green holds a bachelor’s degree and doctorate from Auburn and a master’s degree from Auburn-Montgomery.

“Johnny has demonstrated a profound commitment to diversity at Auburn for many years,” said Heilman. “He brings his experience as special assistant in my office with that commitment, and is highly regarded and respected throughout the campus and larger community.”

Cook, who was named assistant vice president for Outreach in 2005, has been at Auburn since 2000. He holds bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees, all from AU.

“I am very confident in Rick’s ability to continue the vitality and strength of our outreach programming,” said Heilman. “He is an outstanding and well-respected leader at AU who is familiar with every aspect of the Outreach role.”
