AU PUBLISHES REPORT ON DIRECTED STUDIES PROGRAM
A committee of academic administrators has found that irregularities in Auburn University’s directed studies program were limited to one professor each in the sociology and adult education departments and caused by a lack of oversight and poor record-keeping.
The committee’s report, which is available to the public at http://www.auburn.edu/administration/specialreports/directed_studies_report.html, was completed after a comprehensive investigation that included interviewing the individuals involved and reviewing applicable records.
A new policy implemented before the Fall 2006 semester will ensure independent study courses are used properly, according to AU President Ed Richardson. The policy has been endorsed by the committee.
“We have outstanding academic programs at Auburn and our new policies only enhance those programs,” said Richardson. “I’m confident that Auburn is a stronger institution today because we have addressed this issue directly and openly.”
The Auburn University Athletic Department has forwarded a separate report to the NCAA and, according to NCAA protocol, it is not being made public.
