Students from Auburn's McWhorter School of Building Science spent two months abroad Summer 2008 studying 17 construction marvels and 4,000 years of building practices and achievements. The group is compiling their research into a textbook, a first of its kind, about the history of construction for future students.

| AU Summer Abroad in Vienna, Austria |
|
Auburn University is offering an intensive five-week academic language and culture program from June 28 to August 2, 2008, in Vienna, Austria, for undergraduate students of German. No previous knowledge of German is required. The program offers classes at the beginning, intermediate and advanced level as well as additional courses in Cultural and Art History (taught in English). Vienna, known for its outstanding contributions to music, art and intellectual thought, is one of the great cities of Europe. Vienna's theaters, concert halls and museums, its Gothic churches and Baroque palaces, the imperial parks and gardens, make it an ideal place for students to extend their intellectual experience beyond the classroom.

| AU Study Abroad in Salamanca,
Spain |

Four weeks in Salamanca provide the best environment
for intensive study of Spanish, increasing linguistic competence
and encouraging cultural interaction. Undergraduates have daily
classes in language, culture, and literature. Graduate courses
in literature, pedagogy, and linguistics are taught by guest
professors. The program begins in Madrid, includes visits to
Avila, Segovia, and El Escorial, and ends in Paris, France.
Students may also visit Seville, Cordoba, and Granada.

| AU Summer Abroad in Taormina,
Italy |
 |
Launched in summer 2006, College of Liberal Arts
foreign language students traveled to Taormina, Italy on the
island of Sicily for immersion in the Italian language and culture.
The study abroad program includes intensive language instruction,
excursions to Sicilian sites, and cultural activities.

| Joseph S. Bruno Auburn Abroad
in Italy |
 |
An example of AU's successful global
ventures is the Joseph S. Bruno Auburn Abroad in Italy program
in the College of Human Sciences. The program focuses on the
study of individuals and families in the context of their near
environment against a backdrop of the history and culture of
Italy.

In the People's Republic of China,
the American flag flies over SIAS International University,
a campus of 12,000 students that was built by AU Building Science
Professor Peter Weiss. Western architecture and eastern culture
come together and provide a global learning experience for students
who study there.

The School of Architecture continues to explore
innovative, context-based studio formats. In 1977, the School
established a 9-week traveling Study
Abroad Program which has most frequently been conducted
