AU ARCHITECTURE STUDENT GROUP WINS NATIONAL AWARDS

AUBURN - The Auburn University School of Architecture’s chapter of the American Institute of Architecture Students won the 2005-2006 Chapter Honor Award, and AU student chapter member Jennifer Thompson won the Student Research Award.

The AIAS bestows Honor Awards to recognize outstanding achievements by students, educators and professionals for commitment to the education and development of architecture students. Established in 1956, it has more than 120 chapters across the country.

The Auburn chapter of the AIAS has more than 200 members and puts on the nationally recognized annual pumpkin carve. Architecture Professor David Hinson serves as the faculty advisor for the Auburn chapter of AIAS.

“Under the leadership of Katherine Simpson and her team of chapter officers, our AIAS chapter has built on the success of the prior year’s leadership team, a feat I thought would be hard to top,” said Hinson

“The major events of the year, Pumpkin Carve in the fall and the Internship Fair in the spring, have been tremendously successful events once again. But what is most impressive to me is the degree to which the AIAS has deepened and broadened its role as the voice of, and advocate for, the students in our school.

“The 2005-2006 AIAS Chapter leadership has set a new benchmark for how a student organization can be a vibrant, active and positive contributor to the collective life of the school. This is the second year in a row that our AIAS chapter has earned national honors and we fully expect the tradition to continue.”

Thompson, a graduate in Interior Architecture, received the Student Research Award for her work on the uses of biodegradable plastics. “Jenna’s research on the design applications of biodegradable plastics is a great example of how architects of the future must think and act if we’re to respond to the challenge of designing and building for a sustainable future,” Hinson added.

“We are very proud to have an Auburn student in the vanguard of the effort to build in a more sustainable and responsible way and very pleased that the AIAS has recognized Jenna with the Student Research Award.”

The School of Architecture is housed within the College of Architecture, Design & Construction. The components of the CADC are annually regarded and ranked among the best in their respective disciplines nationally for the quality of education and quality of students.

Auburn University is a comprehensive research institution with more than 23,000 students and 6,500 faculty and staff. Ranked among the top 50 public universities nationally, Auburn is Alabama's largest educational institution, offering more than 230 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degree programs.
