THE INSIDE TO SHOWCASE INMATES ART AT JULE COLLINS SMITH MUSEUM
OF FINE ART
AUBURN - The Alabama Prison Arts & Education Project will show Art
on the Inside at the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art at Auburn University.
The exhibition, which runs March 17 through April 7, will highlight the
work of student-inmates enrolled in the art and photography classes of
APAEP and is part of the AU College of Liberal Arts series The Nuisance
of Freedom.
In addition to the displayed art work, there will be a panel presentation
on March 23 at noon at the museum. The presentation will offer an introduction
to the APAEP and the Art on the Inside exhibit. Panelists will include
program director and poetry teacher Kyes Stevens, photography teacher
Brooke King and creative writing teacher Katherine Perry.
The Alabama Prison Arts & Education Project is a program of the Center
for the Arts & Humanities at Pebble Hill in the College of Liberal
Arts here at Auburn University. The project currently offers classes in
the arts and humanities to individuals incarcerated in several central
Alabama correctional facilities. APAEP also works with 13 correctional
facility libraries to develop reading material. To date, the program has
donated more than 11,500 volumes.
APAEP has received funding from the Alabama State Council on the Arts,
the Alabama Humanities Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts,
the Puffin Foundation and the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday,
11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free for all Auburn University students,
staff and faculty, children under the age of 17 and for JCSM members.
Adult admission is $5. Senior citizens, $4.
