AUBIE TO CHALLENGE OTHERS FOR MASCOT OF YEAR TITLE

'AUBIE'

AUBURN -- Aubie, the costumed mascot of Auburn University, has been named to the 12-member second annual Capital One All-America Mascot Team.

Aubie will compete, starting in September, for National Mascot of the Year, which will be announced on Jan. 1, 2004, at the Capital One Bowl in Orlando, Fla.

In January, Aubie was named the nation's No. 1 collegiate mascot for the fifth time -- all in the past 13 years. He took the title from 15 finalists at the Universal Cheerleaders Association's 2003 national championship mascot competition in Orlando, Fla.

"We are extremely proud of Aubie's selection to the 2003 Capital One All-America Mascot Team," said Debbie Shaw, assistant vice president for Alumni Affairs and Aubie's advisor at AU. "We look forward to supporting his quest for the title of Capital One National Mascot of the Year beginning in September."

Aubie, who began as a cartoon created by Birmingham artist Phil Neel and featured on Auburn home football program covers from 1958 through 1976, came to life as the official AU mascot in 1979. Aubie never speaks, but his animated antics entertain Auburn fans of all ages at sporting events and other special occasions.

The Capital One contest also features mascots from the University of Colorado, University of Delaware, University of Florida, University of Georgia, University of Kentucky, University of Montana, Ohio State University, University of Tennessee, University of South Carolina, University of Washington and Western Kentucky University.

The winner will be selected through real-time, on-line polling at www.capitalonebowl.com.

In addition to the $5,000 donated to each school's mascot programs for making the all-America team, the No. 1 mascot will receive an additional $5,000.
