AU JOURNALISM SEEKS NOMINATIONS FOR CAREER AWARDS

AUBURN – Journalism alumni from Auburn University are looking for the brightest and best of their kind.

The AU Journalism Program Advisory Council wants outstanding nominees for three awards to be presented at a March 4 luncheon, explained advisory council chairman Paul DeMarco, a Birmingham attorney and an AU Journalism alumnus. Alumni and friends of AU Journalism are encouraged to submit letters nominating candidates for the awards, DeMarco said. The deadline for receiving the nominations letters is February 14.

“The AU journalism advisory council is also pleased to have Don Logan as keynote speaker for our awards luncheon,” DeMarco said. Logan is chairman of the Media & Communication Group at Time Warner.

Awards to be presented are:

* The Outstanding AU Journalism Alumni Career Award, to be awarded to an AU Journalism alumnus for a distinguished professional career in any field;

* The Outstanding Alabama Community Journalism Career Award, to be awarded for an outstanding career in community journalism in the state of Alabama. Nominees for this award are not required to have AU roots and are not restricted to any form of news media in the state; and

* The Outstanding Media Career Award, to be awarded for an outstanding career in a mass media field. Nominees are not required to have AU roots, but must have lived, worked or gone to school in the state of Alabama.

DeMarco said he also encourages journalists and managers at Alabama newspapers and broadcast stations to nominate candidates for the awards. Letters of nomination do not have to be long, but should be factual and may be accompanied by any specific documentation the writer thinks is appropriate. A person may nominate more than one person for each award category, and writers may mail more than one nomination letter in one envelope. But a separate letter is required for each nomination.

Each letter must identify the respective category for each nomination and explain why the writer believes the nominee is deserving of the award. To be considered, letters must be in the hands of the chairman of the panel of judges no later than February 14.

Letters should be sent to: John Carvalho, Journalism Program Director, Auburn University, 217 Tichenor Hall, Auburn University, AL 36849-5206. Electronic nominations can be sent to Carvalho at carvajp@auburn.edu.
