Carlisle Lobby
Education Curator Tim Brown will gather students with sketchbooks in the museum's galleries to learn about the formal elements of drawing as they pertain to The Advancing American Art Collection. Free of charge.

Curator's Choice Film Series: Chihuly and the Masters of Venice Auditorium
At Dale Chihuly's invitation, two of the great Italian glass masters began a series of visits to the United States. Chihuly worked with them individually and as a group in a series of glassblowing sessions. Watch as Chihuly and the Italian masters combine their talents and push the limits of their creativity. Amber Luster Chandelier, created by Chihuly for the JCSM in 2003, is composed of 600 pieces of glass weighing over 1000 pounds Discover how the Chihuly team builds a monumental piece of sculpture like ours from concept to concrete reality. Free of charge.

Faculty Exhibition Opening Reception

The first faculty exhibition by AU's Department of Art faculty since 2000, this exhibition will feature paintings, prints, drawings, ceramics, sculpture, photography, graphic design, and installations by 20 artists and designers. Many have created new work especially for this exhibition. The exhibit will present a wide range of styles and approaches to art making in the contemporary world. A lecture series by the art history faculty will be presented during the time of the exhibition. Free of charge.

The public is invited to enjoy the museum's permanent collection. Also on display will be an exhibition of works by the faculty of the AU Art Department featuring a range of works in a variety of media including graphic design, sculpture, painting, printmaking, photography and ceramics.

Art Talk for Parents and Grandparents

Using works currently on exhibition in the museum's galleries, Education Curator Tim Brown will introduce parents and grandparents to teaching methods that will excite their children about art. Free of charge.

Curator's Choice Lecture Series: Alan Gehret, Curator of Mill Grove, Philadelphia
Audubon's Birds of America
Auditorium
An avid naturalist and Audubon expert, Gehret is Curator of Mill Grove, the former home and current museum of the 19th century naturalist, John James Audubon. Gehret will share his vast knowledge of both Audubon and nature with the audience. Free of charge.

Gallery Talk: Diane Arbus
Curator of Exhibitions Catherine Walsh will speak in the Wadsworth Gallery, describing the technique and philosophy behind photographer Diane Arbus' striking and sometimes unsettling works.

AfterHours occurs on the first Thursday of every month. Open to the public, it offers an opportunity for visitors to experience art and socialize while listening to live music. Each month features a different theme, live music, refreshments, shopping in the museum shop and other activities usually related to a current exhibition. There are also free guided tours of the permanent collection. Admission for members is free and for non-members admission is $3. There will be a cash bar.

AU Department of Art, Faculty Lecture Series, sponsored by Regions Bank of Lee County: Joyce de Vries, assistant professor of Art History
The Gendering Power in Italian Renaissance Court: the Case of Caterina Sforza De Vries will discuss the patronage of Caterina Sforza, one of the most famous women of Renaissance Italy, and explore how she commissioned works of art and architecture that helped to establish, maintain, and manipulate her public persona.

AU Department of Art, Faculty Lecture Series: Susan Braden, assistant professor of Art History will speak on Architecture of Leisure: the Florida Resort Hotels of Henry Flagler and Henry Plant.
Nineteenth-century railroad barons Henry Flagler and Henry Plant used elegant and decorative architectural styles to attract guests to their Gilded Age resort hotels. Flagler's hotels in St. Augustine and Plant's Tampa Bay Hotel created the still valid image of Florida as an exotic winter playground.

Curator's Choice Film Series: Jacob Lawrence: The Glory of Expression (28 minutes) Romare Bearden: Visual Jazz (25 minutes)

Lawrence and Bearden were the only two African-Americans included in the original 1946 Advancing American Art Collection; both are represented in the AU collection. These two documentaries explore the creative drive of Lawrence and Bearden, as well as the techniques that each of the artists employed.

Curator's Choice Lecture Series: Art and Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright Auditorium
Nicholas Davis, Emeritus Professor of Architecture, will present a lecture entitled Art and Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. Davis is the designer of numerous buildings in Alabama and Mississippi including Loachapoka United Methodist Church, Hargis Maffit Museum near Birmingham and the AU Chapel. Davis has been published in the AIA Journal, Annual of American Architecture and the Journal of Architectural Education.

Exhibition Opening: Lecture and Reception
Auburn Collects: The Noel and Kathryn Dickinson Wadsworth Collection The second in the Auburn Collects series, this exhibition is drawn from the outstanding private collection of Noel and Kathryn Dickenson Wadsworth. The exhibition features such notables of French and American art as Edgar Degas, Mary Cassatt, Pablo Picasso, John Sloan, George Luks and William Glackens.

Gallery Talk: The Creation of a Monumental Mural: Preparatory Drawings of Alma Mater, 2003 created by artist William Baggett
Wadsworth Gallery
Curator of Exhibitions Catherine Walsh will discuss the preparatory cartoons, drawings and sketches created by William Baggett in preparation for the monumental mural, Alma Mater, located in the JCSM auditorium. Baggett spent more than two years conceptualizing and creating these works before executing the mural on site in September 2003.
