The event,
set for 1 p.m., is a response to President George W. Bushs call
to reduce the U.S. dependence on foreign oil.
Bush acknowledged the need for such technologies - even specifically mentioning
switchgrass - in his most recent State of the Union speech.
We'll
fund additional research in cutting edge methods
of producing ethanol, not just from corn, but from wood chips and stalks,
or switchgrass, President Bush said.
Thursdays event will feature brief remarks by Sen. Sessions on foreign
energy dependence and U.S. national security; Asst. Secretary Faulkner
on his departments perspective on renewable energy; AU professor
David Bransby, perhaps the foremost expert on switchgrass in the U.S.,
on the technical feasibility of producing 30 percent of U.S. transportation
fuels from agricultural and forestry products; and Mayor Tony Petelos
of Hoover on ethanol and biodiesel markets in the Southeast and his citys
police fleet, the largest in the nation powered by E-85 (a mixture of
85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline).
