AU CHOIRS’ SPRING CONCERT SET FOR APRIL 9 AT FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH IN OPELIKA

AUBURN - Auburn University’s men’s and women’s choruses and Concert Choir will perform at the AU Music Department’s annual Spring Concert at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, April 9 at First Baptist Church in Opelika.

The Men’s Chorus, conducted by William Powell, assistant director of choral activities, will sing selections including “Down in the Valley,” arranged by George Mead, and “Tshotsholoza,” a South African song arranged by Jeffery Ames.

Powell will also direct the Women’s Chorus, which will perform selections including “Beau Soir” by Claude Debussy and a setting of “Sicut Cervus” by Rosephanye Powell, a music department faculty member.

Under the direction of Thomas R. Smith, AU’s director of choral activities and music department chair, the 100-member Concert Choir will sing several selections it performed on its annual Spring Tour, including “Wake, Awake” by F. Melius Christiansen; “Abide With Me,” arranged by Moses Hogan; “Ain’t Got Time to Die,” arranged by Hall Johnson; and “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross,” arranged by Gilbert Martin. Holding to a long established tradition, the Concert Choir will also perform “The Star Spangled Banner,” arranged by AU Director of Bands Johnnie Vinson, the “Auburn Alma Mater,” and “America, the Beautiful.”

Students from all three choirs come from virtually every academic discipline at Auburn University.

The concert is free.
