AUBURN UNIVERSITY SYMPHONIC BAND TO PERFORM
AUBURN -- The Auburn University Symphonic Band will perform in concert on Nov. 13, at the Auburn High School Auditorium. The free performance will begin at 8 p.m.
A select group of 70 musicians, the Symphonic Band is the premiere performing organization in the AU Band program. The concert offers a unique variety of musical styles including contemporary as well as traditional works.
Conductor of the Symphonic Band is Johnnie Vinson, director of bands and professor of music at AU.
The program will begin with the John Krance transcription "Carmina Burana" by Carl Orff. One of the monuments of the orchestral and choral literature, this work has been an audience favorite for years.
The centerpiece of the program will be the Southeastern premiere of "Bandancing" by Indiana composer, Jack Stamp. Commissioned by the band service organizations Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma, this work was first performed by the National Intercollegiate Band in July. The music is jazz-like in nature and its five movements represent a departure from the composer's usual style.
The concert will conclude with "Culloden" by Mississippi composer Julie Giroux. Based on the Battle of Culloden in 1746, the three-movement work includes numerous Scottish folk songs.
