AUBURN VETERINARY COLLEGE OPEN HOUSE SET FOR APRIL 24

AUBURN -- The Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine's 27th annual open house April 24 features tours, scientific exhibits and entertainment, including an exhibition of sheep-herding dogs.

"Our theme this year is 'Open Your Eyes to the Future of Veterinary Medicine,'" says Dr. Timothy Boosinger, dean of the college. "We always have a great crowd from around the Southeast, including potential students interested in becoming veterinarians as well as families who just come out to enjoy the day."

The event at the veterinary campus on Wire Road starts at 8:30 a.m., CDT, and ends at 2 p.m., CDT.

Exhibits will feature anatomy, ultrasound, small animal surgeries, large animals, endoscopy, public health and many other disciplines. Entertainment includes a dog agility course, animal art exhibit, petting zoo, "teddy bear surgery", parade of breeds of dogs and horses and other attractions.

"Junior and senior high school students, as well as college students, can talk with counselors, who can be helpful in suggesting courses for a future career in veterinary medicine," says Dr. Gary Beard, assistant dean for outreach.

There will be a special ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9 a.m., CDT, in honor of Dr. Allen Heath, a professor of food animal medicine who died in an accident last year. His family will serve as the grand marshals and help cut the ribbon.

"Dr. Heath was so well respected that our students wanted to honor him during the event," Beard said. "He was also honored posthumously in February with the Student Government Association's Outstanding Teacher Award."

More than 5,000 people are expected to attend the open house which is coordinated by veterinary students and sponsored by local and national businesses.

"Support from the business community is greatly appreciated," said Beard. "They help provide funding for many of the events and displays. Several companies are also donating items to be given away."
