AU BANDS TO HONOR LONGTIME DIRECTOR VINSON AT HALFTIME CEREMONY SATURDAY

AUBURN - Auburn University’s Marching Band and the AU Alumni Marching Band will take the field together Saturday to present a combined halftime program for fans attending the AU-Arkansas State football game. More than 700 musicians will perform.

A special tribute is planned to honor long-time Director of Bands Johnnie Vinson, who plans to retire in May 2007 after 36 years in the band program. Vinson, an Auburn alumnus, began his career at Auburn in 1969 as assistant director.

“We just thought it would be an appropriate time to recognize his many years of service to the university and the Auburn band program,” said Rick Good, director of AU’s Marching Band.

Vinson, who is originally from Andalusia, enrolled as an undergraduate student in the fall of 1962. He then joined the Auburn Band staff in the fall of 1969 as assistant director. He was named marching band director in the fall of 1985 and assumed his current status of director of bands in the fall of 1991.

In addition to the musical performance of the 1955 version of “War Eagle,” the combined bands will perform “Glory,” “Victory March,” and the “Alma Mater.”

Auburn University is a preeminent land-grant and comprehensive research institution with more than 23,500 students and 6,500 faculty and staff. Ranked among the top 50 public universities nationally, Auburn offers more than 230 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degree programs.
