CAMPERS BECOME SCIENTISTS AT AUBURN UNIVERSITY
AUBURN -- The 2006 Youth Experiences in Science (Y.E.S.) summer camps,
sponsored by the AU College of Science and Mathematics, offer a wide variety
of mini-classes and hands-on activities in science and math to students
in grades one through ten in three summer sessions on the AU campus.
In the third and last session, July 10-12, students in grades six through
ten will make Harry Potters world come alive in Polymer Chemistry;
build and race vehicles in Off to the Races; learn about the ancient art
of paper folding in Games, Puzzles and Geometry; explore how to improve
their communities in Earth Rangers; and use forensic science to solve
a real crime in Medical Technology and Forensics.
AU faculty and exceptional public and private school teachers will conduct
mini-courses in subjects such as chemistry, botany, forensics, physics,
geometry and geography.
Campers will perform experiments, engage in building projects and experience
the practical side of science and math in the world around them. Take-home
materials will encourage campers to continue their scientific explorations
outside the classroom.
Each day will feature a special science-based activity, such as a herpetology
show, a science carnival, and visits from the Auburn University Veterinary
School and the Southeastern Raptor Rehabilitation Center.
Students in grades six through ten can still apply for the July 10-12
Y.E.S. camp. Both residential and commuter options are available.
