AU STUDENTS CONVERT SHIPPING CONTAINER INTO HOME FOR KATRINA VICTIM

The AU-designed shipping container is delivered to the home of Barbra Meyer in Gulfport, Miss. on March 8, 2006.
 
The weather-resistant housing unit will provide Meyer temporary shelter. Her home (left) was severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Shipping containers like this one are typically 8-feet wide, 40-feet long and 9-feet high. This unit was modified for approximately $2,500.
 
Meyer, a volunteer with the Area Agency on Aging, is a former special education teacher with a bachelor’s degree in social services.
